Playing with Alcohol Inks, Abstract Floral, Daily Painting, Flower art

This is what an oil painter does, when she is in a slump!

6x8"

For reasons that are too boring to talk about, I have found myself in an oil painting slump.

When I came to Florida, for three months this winter, I purposely left my oil painting supplies at home.  I brought pastels, watercolors, alcohol inks, etc.  My plan was to force myself to paint with media that was unfamiliar and  awaken my creative juices.  When I was back in the swing of things, I would once again turn to my oils.

Soooo, I created this little piece, for a challenge.  The challenge was to use metallic colored pencils in a composition.  The pencils are not saturated colors and the metallic aspect of them is not strong, so I decided to do a mixed media piece.

This is a combination of the pencils, alcohol inks, and a black sharpie pen.  The hash marks are from the metallic pencils.  The sharpie, should have been a wider tip, but I used what I had.

I found it to be a frustrating and fascinating project.  Successful?  Maybe not.  But it got me back in the art mode, and I plan to work from here.  I already caught myself thinking "I wish I had my oils here", so perhaps my little plot it working.  In any case, I am happy I spent a few hours experimenting.

Abstract Oil Landscape Painting, Small Original Artwork, Coastal Home Decor, Daily Painting

The Outer Banks on North Carolina have been on my mind.  I was thinking of Ocracoke when I painted this little abstract seascape.

The Outer Banks is like no other place I have visited. Surrounded by water, the residents are a hardy type who take pride in providing for themselves.  The danger of living there, is still felt, as the tropical storms and hurricanes devastate the dunes and road on a regular basis.  In earlier times, shipwrecks littered the beaches.

I painted with a palette knife and oils, leaving it as raw and wild as the beaches.

Thanks for viewing my art today.

Acrylic Fluid Art , Daily Painting, Small Abstract Painting

I have been continuing to research and experiment with fluid art, and finally I feel I have made a little progress.

Purchase here
It is fascinating to see what appears as the paints and hues mingle, and frustrating because you can do the exact same technique twice and get two completely different results.

I was very happy with this one, that appears to be hundreds of little bubbles, but is actually hundreds of little cells.

I love how they look on household products!

Is this year flying bye or what?  I think we will all be happy when it is gone!

Palette Knife Techniques

The most enjoyable experiences, I get out of painting, almost always involves a palette knife.  I may start out with a brush in hand, but eventually the knife takes over.

This was my first experience.  I started on a canvas with a half finished painting.  One I had lost interest in ever finishing.

If you are interested in painting with a palette knife, you might want to check out this tutorial.  I found it to be very helpful.

Small Floral Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 8x10" Pink Floral Oil Painting, Palette Knife

I wanted to create a soft, soothing floral still life. Painted on .75" deep canvas, with painted sides. Finished with a light spray of varnish to enhance and protect the colors.

I worked with both brush and palette knife, but 90% of it is the knife.

Hope you enjoy it!

Palette Knife Art, Abstract Oil Painting, Abstract Landscape

I found some square 3 inch deep canvases in my studio, and decided to play around with one.

SOLD

I tried several approaches, but nothing was working for me.  So, I just started playing with paint and my palette knife.  I was envisioning  a sunset over the landscape, choosing colors that "felt" right for me.

You can see how deep the canvas is in this pic.  I actually love these big clunky canvases on shelves rather than walls, and I like the feel of the rough clunky paint.

All in all, it was a fun painting day.

Abstract Landscape Painting, Original Wall Decor, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, Palette Knife Oil Painting, Sunset Art, Textured Art, 9x12"

Some days I just want to smush paint around.  I can almost understand Vincent eating it.  So creamy, so smooth, so beautiful!

When I feel that way, I always get out my palette knife and just enjoy.  Remember that feeling you had as a kid in kindergarten?

Right away my shoulders relax.

Enjoy the day!

Abstract Painting, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, Palette Knife Art

One would think, that abstract painting would be so easy.  My two year old can do that!

You may be right!  Two year olds are fearless.  They know not the meaning of failure.

Nothing is more frightening than a blank canvas when you have no plan.  The idea of abstract seems to appeal to every painter, but the reality is quite something else.

This piece is one of my favorites, using the cross composition.

Colorful Abstract Art, Textured Home Wall Decor, Daily Painting, 8x8x3", SOLD

Today is gray, foggy and damp, so I decided to post the most fun painting I could find.

SOLD

You know how I love color and texture and this little painting has it all.

I painted it on a 8x8x3" canvas, so even the shape is unique.  It's chunky and cute and it resides on a bookshelf , where it brightens the whole room.  I cannot help but smile each time I look at it.

The canvas was a mistake.  I did not realize how deep it was when I ordered it.  What could I possibly do with it?  Well, for this painting, I think it is perfect!

Have a fantastic day!

For me, the best time to visit the beach is sunrise or sunset.  It is such a spiritual experience.

In the morning, I am usually alone.  Just me, my camera, the birds, and possible a lone fisherman, trying his luck.

At sunset, you may not be alone, but in a group of spectators standing in awe as the sun sinks into the sea.

This is worked with a palette knife.  I enjoy lots of texture, so I left it on this piece.  Maybe it is more of a skyscape?   Maybe it is more abstract or impressionistic?  Whatever it is, it reflects my mood at the time, which I think, is the point of painting.

Abstract Art Print, Acrylic Pouring, Giclee Print on Canvas

We have left the summer heat behind and are enjoying the cooler mountain air.  Along with the cooler air, I have brought a desire to experiment.

Poured painting is another skill to be practiced and perfected.  On the surface, it seems simple enough, but, I find I ditch more than I save.
Technique is critical and varied, and in the end, you give up control and hope for the best.  I warn you....it is addictive!
Can you believe it will be August tomorrow?

Pear Still Life, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, Kitchen Wall Decor, 6x8" Original Artwork

So, it is with a little relief, that I painted this small still life.

Abstract Seascape Painting, Daily Painting, Small Oil Painting, 11x14" Original Oil Painting

It is so hard to believe, that we have been living in the mountains of North Carolina for a year and a half.  I marvel at the beautiful mountain scenes outside my door.  Asheville has sooo much to offer!

But there is something it cannot offer...the beach, the sea, the salt air.

Maybe that is why I was moved to do this abstract.

Purchase here

I had fun playing with the direction of my knife strokes.  Still a minimalist painting, but with a little added interest.   Hmmmm, I see a mountain abstract in my future!

The perfect wall decor for a beach house, or for someone dreaming of a beach house.

We will be heading back to the beach soon, and I will have sand on my toes, once again.

Have a blessed day!
