Mixed Media Abstract "Golden Marble" 4x12" SOLD

This is a fun technique  that Carol Nelson shared with us in her workshop last spring.  Carol, who is a "Golden Artist" as in Golden mediums and gels, is versed in techniques you and I have never thought about.  She is truely creative and a very charming and sharing person.

Purchase here
SOLD

Carol developed this technique when she looked at her palette one day and thought it was as interesting as the piece she was working on.  So....she figured out how to turn her palette into a piece of art!  This is the first technique she shared with us in her workshop and it turned out to be a fun project and a great ice breaker!

She probably wouldn't mind if I told you how to do it, but I don't want to let the cat out of her bag.  Only Carol can tell!  Here is a link to her blog.  I know you will enjoy it and if you search through enough of her posts, she probably tells her secrets.  If you get to go to one of her workshops, I guarantee you will have a fun filled and informative few days with her.

Abstract Painting, Contemporary Art, "Texture" by Carol Schiff, 16x20" Mixed Media

I was looking at my blogger statistics recently, and noticed that I will be celebrating my 7th year of writing this blog in two weeks!  How did that happen?

To celebrate, I thought I would re-post my most popular painting.  I was shocked to see that two of my works had many, many, more views than the others.  In fact, they had two or three times the amount of views than the 3rd place painting.  They are two completely different pieces of work and even weirder...neither have sold!

I suppose, I should wait for two weeks, but I have to act while I still like the idea, so here is the 2nd most popular  post:

This is a view of a charming cottage and garden I found on a walk through Hyde Park in London.  The cottage was actually some type of park office and the grounds were incredible.

And here is the big winner..............................

If you would like to read the original post, with a description of how this was painted, you will find it here:

http://carolschiffstudio.blogspot.com/2012/02/daily-abstract-painting-texture-20x16.html

Although I had painted a few small abstract type items, I consider this to be my first REAL abstract.  With 1138 views, it far out paced every other post!

So there is a big difference in the two paintings.  The only thing they have in common is that I painted them both and neither sold!  :)  Maybe, with time, this will become my MOST POPULAR POST!

Expressionists Abstract Painting, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, Cross Composition in Orange, Blue and Purple, 8x8x1.5 Original Oil

This contemporary abstract painting is on a heavily textured stretched canvas.
I used a cross (one of my favorites) composition and split complementary colors of blue, purple and orange to achieve a nice glow. I painted with a knife to get even more texture and very subtle color changes.

I was always fairly mystified about the process of painting an abstract, but I am finding that it is much like any other artwork.  You must have a composition, a point of interest,  color interaction and contrast.

A Painting Workshop to Remember

Today, I am repeating a post, from a few years ago.  I think it is worthy of your attention, again.  Enjoy!

A few weeks ago, my friends Carmen and Donna and I drove to Fernandina Beach, FL to attend a 4 day workshop with Elio Camacho.   Elio is one of my favorite painters and my very favorite instructor and I have been lucky enough to attend with workshops twice a year for the past three years.

I started each day with this beautiful sunrise over the ocean, while eating breakfast at the hotel.

This is one of Elio's 36x48" demos that he paints in just three hours!

Here Elio met a challenge to paint without darks.  He often states a painting should bring it's own light.  I think this one meets that requirement

Another of his larger than life paintings.

This was a 25 minute demo he did for us on foam core.  He pushed the color even more than usual and got wild and crazy.

His brushwork is very exciting...something I am hoping to bring to my work.

Elio spent a year painting blue studies, then moved on and studied yellows and reds.  He likes to set up still life, to challenge his students, all in a single color.  He believes red is the most difficult color to paint.  If you can do a red painting, you can really see color.  This was a 20 minute demo he did for us.

We hated to leave the workshop after 3.5 intense and fun days.  To console ourselves, we had a final lunch of fried shrimp at our favorite eatery.

A final photo of Carmen and Donna, de-stressing with  ice cream in front of Island Art Association.  We thank the members for hosting us once again.  Then we hop into our car for the drive home.

One last classic Elio demo that he painted in about 15 minutes, out of his head.  I almost cried when he scrapped it off the next morning.

Needless to say, we are excited to return for his next Florida workshop in the spring.  You can find his workshop schedule here.

Palette Knife Art, Textured Painting, Seascape Oil, Abstract Seascape, SOLD

I wanted to do a seascape, or actually a beach painting, somewhere between an abstract and impressionism.

SOLD

I wanted to record just my memories and impressions of trips to the beach.  I painted with a knife and tried to work quickly.

I tried not to think too much about the colors I was using or where I was putting them, but tried to keep it really instinctive.

I wanted plenty of texture in this piece.

It was a fun exercise!

Although this painting has sold, it is available as a giclee print on canvas or distressed wood planks.  Contact me for sizes and pricing.

Thanks for viewing my blog today.

Small Landscape Painting, "Intracoastal Island" by Carol Schiff, 6x8" Oil, SOLD

This small landscape painting depicts a scene I see every day.  Florida's intracoastal waterway is dotted with small uninhabited islands.

Purchase here
SOLD

During warmer months, the islands are often gathering places for camping and fishing trips or simply a fun boating trip for a family outing.  Even the youngest kids enjoy the sandy beaches and calm, shallow waters and many picnics and happy days occur there.

I painted the scene with a palette knife in the style I like to call "color weaving" which gives it a nice textured look.  I particularly like a small landscape painting in a simple black frame which, I feel, gives a sense of elegance.  I love when you pin my work!

Spring Abstract Painting, Textured Art, Small Oil Painting, Daily Painting, 6x8" Abstract

I enjoy playing around with color, trying to evoke emotion, simply with color.

purchase here

Since spring is just around the corner (thankfully), I named this "April Muse".

Turns out, it is actually a 3-D painting, as in places the paint stands out .5" from the canvas.

Hope you enjoy your day!

Marsh Landscape, Knife Painting, COLORS OF THE MARSH by Carol Schiff, 8x8x1.5" oil

The sun is quickly sinking below the horizon and within minutes the colors of the marsh will disappear.

My goal here was to suggest the beauty and colors of the marsh in late summer.  I wanted to use plenty of texture and thick paint to do so.

I really love the gallery wrap canvases from "The Edge".  I like the chunky shape of this small 8x8" with the 1.5" depth that gives this small painting more presence.

Abstract Seascape, Daily Painting, Abstract Mxed Media "Sea Rhythm" 6x8" SOLD

The sea is so fascinating to me.  I love the thought of all the life under the surface of the sea....movement as the waves are pulled to the shore, tiny sea creatures burrowing into the sand..........

SOLD

Jelly fish that look like man-made objects, balloons, or aliens...........

So many interesting and exciting things going on that we are totally unaware of.  All we see is the beautiful surface of the sea.

This piece is inspired by that thought.  The paint is an example of pouring technique, along with texture and metallic elements.  Although the metallic has photographed in a warm color, it is actually silver.  Much experimenting going on in my studio these days. Feel free to pin it!

Abstract Painting, Small Abstract, Alcohol Inks, Experimenting

I am finally writing a post in my new home!  It has been a long and stressful journey, from Melbourne, FL to Asheville NC.  I know I am home, because I am finally painting, posting and doing all those art related activities that were a part of my life for 25 years.  Welcome home!

This is an experiment with alcohol inks.  I purchased the inks, as a change from my oils, but my move has gotten in the way of experimenting with them.  I did find this little sample to be interesting and have lots of ideas on ways to use them in the future.  Have you tried them?  I am open to suggestions and techniques.

Thanks for visiting my blog today.

Small Abstract Landscape, "Peaks" by Carol Schiff, 8x8x1.5 Oil

I paint impressionism and abstract and today I felt the need for a small abstract landscape.  We spend lots of time in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina which may have been my inspiration here.  I think, though, it reminds me more of the southwestern mountains.  Maybe it's the colors.
